What Jacó is like
Jacó is the beach San José escapes to—about two hours door to sand. That makes it Costa Rica's liveliest beach town: a long palm-lined bay backed by green hills, with a restaurant, surf shop, or sunset bar never more than a block away.
The beach is strikingly different from Guanacaste's: about 3.5 kilometers of dark gray volcanic sand facing the open Pacific. The swell is consistent year-round—mellower rollers at the south end for beginners, faster and punchier at the north end for experienced surfers. Playa Hermosa, ten minutes south, is world-class.
It's also one of the best wildlife bases in the country. Carara National Park, thirty minutes north, is the most reliable place in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws in the wild, and the Tárcoles River bridge is famous for its enormous crocodiles.

Macaw mornings
Scarlet macaws commute out of Carara National Park at sunrise—you'll often hear them fly over the beach. The park is 30 minutes north and worth the early start.
Stop at the crocodile bridge
The Tárcoles River bridge on the way into town has some of the largest American crocodiles anywhere. Free, five minutes, unforgettable.
Pick your end of the beach
South end for gentler waves and swimming, north end for punchier surf. We'll set you up wherever your day is happening.
Sunset walks are long here
At low tide the beach is enormous—walk the full sweep of the bay as the sky turns orange behind the boats.
